A compost bin heater helps your composter to stay active through a cold winter.

Active bacteria and micro organisms inside a composter can increase the temperature of the compost up to 70°C. In this temperature the biomass decomposes quickly and the organisms simultaneously destroy all or most of the seeds and soil-borne diseases. The temperature outside the compost bin greatly affects the wellbeing and activity of the organisms.

The heater element is inside a stainless steel tube. The element is surrounded by quartz crystals, which help distribute the heat evenly on the surface of the tube.

The Sulana® T100 W is energy efficient since it is controlled by a timer. With the timer, the heater is on for 15 minutes at a time. During a normal winter 15 minutes every 2 hours is enough. This way the electricity usage is only around 0,3 kWh/day, totaling to about 0,075 € per day (assuming 0,25 €/kWh).

Alternatively you can just turn on the heater for a few hours when the compost bin has frozen. Often just a few hours is enough to melt the compost and it reactivates.

The 24-hour timer is easy to program on a 15-minute accuracy. The timer can handle even harsh freezing temperatures. Installed vertically according to the arrow on the tube.
