A compost bin heater helps your composter to stay active through a cold winter.

Active bacteria and micro organisms inside a composter can increase the temperature of the compost up to 70°C. In this temperature the biomass decomposes quickly and the organisms simultaneously destroy all or most of the seeds and soil-borne diseases. The temperature outside the compost bin greatly affects the wellbeing and activity of the organisms.

The spiral heater is energy efficient since it increases the temperature inside the bin to 50°C and then turns off the heater. The micro organisms are thankful of the warm-up and start actively breaking down the organic matter. A turned-off heater does not consume electricity. When the bin temperature drops below 40°C, the heater turns back on and activates the organisms.

The Sulana® spiral heater is installed to the bottom of the bin in autumn or early winter during emptying.

Some known compost bin manufacturers sell 20 watt heaters. Unfortunately they are way too underpowered to keep the workers in the compost active.

When the spiral heater is in the bottom of the bin, it warms up the entire compost and you can be sure you’re able to empty the bin, even in winter.

Installation instructions

  1. Empty out 20-30 cm of space from the bottom of the bin. The mass above should “hang” in place.
  2. Place the spiral flat on the bottom of the bin.
  3. Close the bottom hatch.
  4. Collapse the compost from above using a spade or a stick.

Emptying the compost bin: Pull out the spiral heater from the bin before emptying it to prevent damaging the heater.
